"Burning Rye" Takes 2nd Place

My friend Lisa Bowman entered the Literary LEO contest this year and was honored to win 2nd place in the black and white category. Her photo will be published in the January 28 issue. If you are in the Louisville area, be sure to pick up a copy this week and join me here in congratulating Lisa on the honor!

I love black and white photography and love when there is a good story behind the photo as well. Here is Lisa's description of finding this great photo op.

We moved into our house in the Highlands late last summer across the street from an apartment building that had burned in March of 2008. We noticed that the lock on the door was busted and other people had been in the building, so we decided to investigate. My son Louis was rummaging around looking for things to salvage and I was taking photos. He called to me from another room and said that I had to "get a shot of this". I photographed it as I found it - nothing was moved for the shot. The building was so eerie because it was just as people had left it after the fire 6 months earlier - food in the pantries and fridges, clothing in the drawers... You could tell that people had been there to hang out and party since the fire, but it seemed as if most things were left untouched. Like walking into a dream. Pretty cool. We made a few trips into the building to salvage what seemed worthy and take photos. They are now cleaning up the place to turn it into condos. I'm glad we explored it first!
