Our Trip to Hubers Farm in Indiana

I took the day off last Friday to spend with my mom and grandmother. Her nursing home was taking a trip to Hubers in Starlight, IN. Mom and I went to spend the day with her and to help out with the others that went. Almost all were in wheelchairs so an extra set of hands was appreciated. We had a wonderful lunch with fried biscuits and apple butter for starters, then went outside. What a gorgeous day it was! The weather was perfect. Cool in the morning and then warmed up into the 80's with lots of sunshine. A great day to soak up the sunlight for these residents. I think the highlight for all of them was feeding the ducks at the lake. There were machines that dispensed food and we passed out food to anyone that wanted some (which was everyone)! I think they could have stayed all day watching the ducks! My grandmother had a wonderful day.

After everyone was loaded up into the vans, my mom and I went to the winery for some complimentary wine sampling! That was fun too. Here are some images of the beautiful scenery.

Some of My Favorite Fall Traditions

The first day of fall, according to the calendar, was September 23. But last week it was still in the 80’s here, which was pretty nice. Today the high will only be 70 and it’s raining too. Getting ready for work I was forced to consider my summer wardrobe. Since I could not wear capris or a summer skirt and sandals to work today, I guess today is MY first official day of fall. Don’t get me wrong, I love fall, but I also love my summer clothes.

Fall has always been my favorite time of year. I love the color of the leaves as they change and then later the distinctive smell of the leaves when they are on the ground. My son is 18 now, but I can still recall the sound of the leaves crunching under his stroller as we went for walks down the sidewalk in our old neighborhood. I remember one morning in particular after Halloween and there was candy scattered on the ground. My son was about 1 1/2 months old that day, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

I love candy apples and sipping hot apple cider and watching the steam roll off the top of the cup into the cool air. My friend Lisa and I had an annual tradition of going to the St. James Art Fair the first weekend in October. That was always a great place to get a steaming cup of cider on a crisp fall morning. We would bundle up in the morning and then by afternoon remove layers, as it would always warm up as the fair became more crowded. I love pumpkin rolls with cream cheese and pumpkin bread with chocolate chips and now even autumn or pumpkin ale. I just tried one from Blue Moon and one from Sam Adams this week. If you like cinnamon, cloves, allspice and pumpkin, you will like them. Even if you are not a big fan of beer, like me.

I also love decorating for fall, with Indian corn, pumpkins, fall leaves and my scarecrow and hay bale too. Halloween to me is the perfect holiday. Kids are involved. Heck it’s mostly about the kids. You don’t have to stress yourself out, shop, buy gifts, spend hours on decorating a tree, or overeat. The only outlay is the candy. I’ve learned to not buy bags of chocolate ahead of time as these will invariably get opened and by October 31, they are just a memory. I’ve learned to buy candy that appeals to kids more than me so I won’t be tempted as much. I am immune to Nerds, bubble gum and sour candy. I love Skittles and Starbursts as much as the next kid, but I don’t binge on those like the bag of Snickers hidden in my office. Which sadly, is almost empty. I broke my #1 rule of not breaking the seal. Doh!

One of my best fall memories has to be going to Nashville, IN (Brown County) with my mom and grandmother. We would normally go in the fall in the hopes the trees would already be turning colors. Sometimes we would spend the night. We would always eat lunch at the Artists Colony restaurant. If you’ve never been, Brown Co. is a lovely part of Indiana and there are lots of great artisans in the area for holiday shopping. This Friday we are going to Huber’s which is a farm/orchard (also in IN) that has a restaurant and farmer’s market and gift shop. It will be easier for my grandmother to get around. They are known for their fried biscuits and apple butter, yet another fall favorite of mine.

I would be remiss not to mention that I also love to hike with my husband in the fall. Our summers are so oppressively hot and humid that it’s not fun to hike then. We always look forward to hitting the trail when the weather turns cool and sometimes going to the lake to watch the deer. We also like to get a cabin at Natural Bridge/Red River Gorge and spend a quiet weekend together.

I could go on and on! There is so much to love about the fall season!

Our Beloved Kitty Cosmo

Admiring his fine self in my makeup mirror.

Watching the koi in our pond from his favorite viewing spot. You will always find him there. He hangs out on the bottom rung of the chair or he'll sit in the window if it's open.

His "working the pole" routine in the spare bedroom. He loves to squirm around and hang onto the bed frame. I am powerless over his cuteness. And he knows this.

Here are a few pictures of our most special kitty Cosmo. Cosmo is about a year old and was named for Cosmo Kramer on Seinfeld. He doesn't enter a room like Kramer. We just liked the name.

We adopted Cosmo last November from a local rescue organization. They didn't know a lot about his past, but he showed up at the pet store on a dog social night. Not sure if that was good timing or bad, but he was noticed for sure. They managed to catch him the second time he came around. We adopted him as soon as we met him, even though his eyes were watery, he had ear mites and he sneezed a lot. The vet put him on antibiotics and had eye ointment for him and he eventually got better.

He has always been submissive to our older cat Tucker and they are just now to the point where they get along. Let's just say Tucker tolerates him now.

Cosmo's favorite thing to do is sit by the window and watch the fish in our koi pond. He loves it when we open the window for him. His other favorite pastime is our nightly bedtime treat ritual. All I need to do is bang the metal handle on my nightstand drawer and he comes flying into the room, across the bed and in position to get his three treats.

We recently noticed that he was acting odd. Laying on the dryer for several days in a row and having difficulty breathing. He also failed to show up for his bedtime treats which was a big red flag for us. We got an appointment at the vet last Thursday and the news wasn't good. He was running a fever and the xray confirmed his body was filled with fluid, so much that his lungs had nowhere to expand.

The vet told us it could be a couple things, but a xray would tell us more. She seemed apprehensive when she showed us a "normal" xray and then showed us Cosmo's xray. The diagnosis was one we feared. He has FIP which is feline infectious peritonitis. I had never heard of this until Thursday night. It is a disease with no cure which is always fatal. We were devastated. It seems this disease begins with a common coronavirus which just about all cats are exposed to at some point in their lives. However, in some cats (mostly kittens with weak immune systems or very old cats) the virus mutates in their system, within their cells. By the time you see the symptoms they don't have much time left. The vet tells us he has weeks or maybe months. His chest will continue to fill with fluid (even though we just put him on a water pill) and it will cause more respiratory issues. Basically he won't be able to breathe. The vet said not to let it go too far as we don't want to see him suffer.

He isn't eating much now and hides a lot. Our cats have not had canned cat food, they just eat dry. So I have tried to entice him with tiny pieces of cooked chicken breast, banana pudding, anything I have on hand to pique his interest. I am told he needs protein and we could even try baby food, (like the meat versions) in order to get him some extra protein. I am babying him and giving him all the love I can for the time that he has left with us. It breaks my heart to lose another one. Our two previous kitties had diabetes, cancer and arthritis.

Our vet said she rescued two kittens herself, that both seemed a little sickly at the time, they were diagnosed with FIP and she had to put both of them down after only having them two months. It made me feel slightly better when she reminded me that Cosmo has had a wonderful year of life with us, verus being out on the streets as a stray. I just need to keep telling myself that.
